Dismissal of the "Well Made Play"

The Bald Soprano has been a fixture at the Théâtre de la Huchette in Paris since 1957. Ionesco's most famous play has become a standard that many absurd playwrights reach for. The Bald Soprano tells the story of The Smiths, a couple from London; and the Martins who are over for dinner. Later they are joined by the Smith's maid Mary and her lover the Fire Chief. The couples engage in countless banter back and forth and back and forth until the last scene where Ionesco goes back to the beginning and the Smiths become the Martins and the Martins become the Smiths. Ionesco said in an interview,

"I wanted to give a meaning to the play by having it begin all over again with two characters. In this way the end becomes a new beginning but, since there are two couples in the play, it begins the first time with the Smiths and the second time with the Martins, to suggest the interchangeable nature of the characters: the Smiths are the Martins and the Martins are the Smiths".

Six Characters in Search of an Author by Lugi Pirandello is about Six Characters in Search of An Author. Six "Characters" interrupt the daytime rehearsal of a theater company's production of a Pirandello play. Abandoned by the author who created them , they are seeking a new one to put on their drama. To the Actors chagrin, they convince the theater company's Manager and attempt to produce their unwritten play. This play is one of the many plays in the Theater of the Absurd in which there is a play within the play.

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead is Tom Stoppard's most famous play. Set as the untold story of Hamlet's childhood friends, the play follows the two on their journey to visit the deranged prince in the hopes that they may help him. I will explicate this play more in posts later on.
